Cold Chain Packaging and Sustainability
Reflective insulation built on low-emittance metallized film is fueling growth in sustainable cold chain packaging for online grocery and meal kit delivery, offering an eco-friendly alternative to expanded polystyrene.
Reflective Insulation
Reflective insulation has experienced steady growth in recent years, driven by strong economic conditions and building industry demand, alongside emerging applications in newer markets.
How Reflective Insulation Works
Reflective insulation consists of metallized film with low emittance (high thermal reflectivity) that, when combined with plastic bubble or paper, reduces heat flow within airspaces.
This technology has found application in cold chain packaging—temperature-controlled supply chains designed for shipping perishable foods, temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, fresh flowers, and similar products. The reflective film maintains controlled temperatures by reflecting heat away from containers while the bubble provides air circulation and product protection.
Growth Industry
This concept has expanded dramatically with the rise of online shopping, particularly online grocery delivery and meal kit services. According to the Food Market Institute, online-only grocery shopping increased six percent in 2017, with millennial online grocery adoption jumping fifty percent from 2016. The industry projects that "70% of US Consumers will be grocery shopping online by 2022 – 2024."
Growing consumer awareness of packaging waste is driving demand for sustainable solutions. Reflective cold chain packaging offers an environmentally preferable alternative to traditional expanded polystyrene containers.
Challenges and Solutions
Companies are developing innovative sustainable insulators using recycled jeans, cotton, coffee jute bags, and non-GMO cornstarch. Combining these materials with metallized film facings creates effective recyclable solutions. One successful application laminates metallized film to corrugated for easy separation during recycling.
Opportunities
Future innovations may include compostable reflective layers to enhance eco-friendly attributes in cold chain packaging.
